Origin

Baby blue, whether referring to eyes or anything colored blue, refers to a blue color that is associated with the eyes of newborn babies, most of which have a pale blue color caused by the fact that the melanin pigment has not yet developed. It takes from nine months to a year for a baby’s permanent eye color to develop (color changes can continue occurring for longer, in some). The term ‘baby blues’ however, often refers to the eyes alone and it’s possible for it to refer to any blue color.

The blues has also long been a slang term for sadness or depression and the term baby blues to refer to post-birth sadness was coined by Nicholson J. Eastman in his book Expectant Motherhood, written in 1940.
