The first movie was the bomb. But the sequel totally bombed. I was so disappointed.
Confused? I used the word bomb in two different ways to mean two different things. Both these uses are commonly used American slang and we can consider them both idiomatic.
The first movie was the bomb.
When we say ‘the bomb’ as a descriptor, we mean that something is very good and that we liked it and enjoyed it; it is excellent; very high quality; extremely entertaining, etc.
The bomb is usually used for movies, tv shows, concerts, and things like that.
So, when I said the first movie was the bomb, I meant that it was excellent and very entertaining.
But, the sequel totally bombed.
When the word bomb is used as a verb in this way, it means that something was bad and that it failed. The movie didn’t blow up or self-destruct, although I guess we can say that it metaphorically self-destructed.
So, the movie was not entertaining. Not many people went to see it. It didn’t make much money. It was a box-office flop. It was unsuccessful.
Totally, by the way, is a common way of saying completely or thoroughly.
Bomb has yet another slang or idiomatic usage.
When a person is bombed, they are very drunk; highly intoxicated.
“Man, you were completely bombed at the party last night. I was glad I took your keys.”
