X-Ray Vision

X-Ray vision, in popular culture, is the supernatural ability to see through solid objects. This is a power given to certain comic book superheroes, most notably Superman, but Supergirl, Olga Mesmer and Ultra Boy. It is also used figuratively as an idiom. It is not always clear how superheroes see through objects and actual x-rays aren’t always the explanation But, Superman’s ability to see through solid objects as well as other visual powers, have always been attributed, quite unscientifically, to X-rays.

Origin

X-ray vision alludes to the power of x-rays to help us see through solid matter while being absorbed by some materials.  However, X-rays do not actually do this. Instead, they pass through most matter easily, allowing images to be taken showing inside the body, containers, or other objects. Those materials that absorb the x-rays more than others enable certain structure to be seen as more dense. For instance, our bones absorb more x-rays, allowing them to be seen on x-ray images.
